Hayes, Waterloo, other state campgrounds announce fall events

on

Fall camping can be fantastic. It is not as hot as summer, the leaves and atmosphere in the campgrounds can be spectacular, and getting out there “one more time” before the snow flies can make the coming winter go by just a little bit faster.

Plus, many Michigan campgrounds, including several in and around Jackson County, feature fall-themed activities like trick-or-treating and hay rides.

These events are a great way to welcome autumn and feature activities such as pumpkin carving, costume contests, trick-or-treating and more. Each park puts its own personal spin on the celebration, so no two events are exactly the same.

Below is a list of upcoming harvest festival dates and locations. Asterisks (*) denote events for those with camping reservations.

Walker Tavern Historic Site near Brooklyn, Michigan, will host a seasonal celebration Saturday, Oct. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Friends of Walker Tavern, the event is open to children ages 5-15 and accompanying adults. Participants can join in many activities – including face painting, pumpkin bowling and pumpkin ring toss – and will get a pumpkin to take home.

“Fall is a great time to celebrate the harvest and enjoy some family fun outdoors in Michigan,” said site historian Laurie Perkins.

Oct. 10 is also Pumpkin Quest in Brooklyn, starting at 10 a.m., and the Appleumpkin Festival in Tecumseh, beginning at 9 a.m.

“Why not make a day of it and bring the family to all three events?” said Friends of Walker Tavern President Bonnie McJennett. “Walker Tavern is on the route between the other events.”
